Spring 1

Week 6

On Monday, we learnt to juggle! Mr Pryke came down to show off his skills and to be a 'blue' coach, in-line with our ReflectEd. The majority of us started the lesson off as 'red', which meant we didn't know anything about juggling. A few of us were 'yellow', which meant we knew a little about it but needed some more support. As the session went on, we found that we floated between the colours. When we became confident in the first step (which made us green) we then moved on to the next step, which meant many of us were back to being red/yellow again. This was a great session as it showed us that by breaking down a task into smaller steps, this allowed us to build on our perseverance and resilience.

Week 5

This week in PE, we finalised our dance routines and then performed them to the rest of the class. When creating our dances, we chose from a list of moves and performed them to a count of 8. The moves we chose from were extend, travel, kick, slide, ripple, jump, tilt, fall, twist and spin. Can you spot any of these moves in the pictures?

Week 4

During our Art lesson this week, we learnt a range of techniques that can be created when working with Indian ink. Using a paintbrush and a wooden skewer, we were able to create colour values (shades of colour after adding varying amounts of water to the ink), colour washes (where the ink bled into the water wash) and differing line widths and patterns.

After this exploration, we began to recreate land and city scapes from around North America.

Our challenge was to confidently take risks in our sketchbook and explore what WE could achieve when using ink!

Week 3

In Art this week, we have continued building on our topic of using mixed media for land and cityscapes. Today, we had an exploration session, where we tried out 7 different media to see what it was like to work with. We used chalk, charcoal, colouring pencils, handwriting pens, oil pastels, water colours and Indian ink. We spent a short amount of time using each media, which meant we could focus on what effect we could create with each rather than worrying too much about our drawings being perfect. Take a look at our pictures to see what we have created so far.

Week 2

In English, we have been learning about explanation texts. We read some examples of how machines work, looking at the use of causal conjunctions, time conjunctions, technical vocab and rhetorical questions to hook the reader. Then we had a lot of fun creating our own machines for the areas we felt were most important: how to complete your homework easily, how to please your teacher and how to tidy your bedroom with ease. There was an incredible range of designs and we are looking forward to explaining how they would work next week.

Also this week, our class Eco Rep finished designing her battery recycling container and the whole class were extremely impressed! We have already filled it over half way.

Week 1

This week, we have started a unit for Art called Mixed Media Land and City. We looked at the artists Vanessa Gardiner and The Shoreditch Sketcher and explored some of their artwork. In our sketchbooks, we produced a page about them.

Autumn 2

Week One

PSHE - Celebrating Differences

This week in PSHE, we have been learning about cultural diversity. We played games from China and Europe and celebrated diversity in the UK.

 Week Two

Science - Lesson 1 Space

In Science this week, we began our new unit 'Space'. The children began by sharing some of the interesting facts they already knew. After that, we drew the planets in our book to show the order of the planets. Finally, we used the Chromebooks to research interesting facts about the 8 planets in our solar system.

 Week Three

Viking Day - Meerkats

On Monday, Year 5 had an unforgettable Viking Day as our visiting experts bought history to life! The children looked fantastic in their costumes and spent the morning creating traditional Viking crafts before learning some battle formations. In the afternoon, the children became archaeologists, carefully digging through soil to uncover Viking artefacts and exploring what these discoveries could tell us about life in the past. It was a brilliant day of hands-on learning and adventure! A huge thank you to all the adult volunteers too!

Week  Four

We have had a very busy week. We have finished our stories and published them in our Writing Journals and we have adding and subtracting mixed numbers in Maths. In Science, we learnt about night and day and in History thought about who might have been king after Edward the Confessor. In Music, we started our unit for singing and sang some Christmas songs. We are looking forward to sharing them with an audience on the 17th December.

Week 5

In PE this week, we played a range of team games. We mixed all 3 classes up and got into teams of around 10. We started off with a relay race where we tried to move a cone up and down an obstacle course using only our feet - this proved quite difficult! After this, we had to hold hands in our line and get a hoop from one end to the other without letting go; we were impressed with how easily some groups found this! Then we played the good-old 'over/under' game with a basketball. Finally, we put all these games together in an obstacle course and raced against each other. There was a lot of excitement and it was a very close race at the end!
