Autumn Term

Week 7

In music, we have been exploring The Carnival of the Animals by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. We have learnt about the different orchestral instruments featured in the piece and discussed how the composer uses sound to bring each animal to life.

This week, the children began planning their own compositions, carefully considering how to use the musical elements of tempo, dynamics and timbre to create different effects. They thought about the sounds made by different instruments and how these could be combined to represent their chosen animals creatively.

Week 6

This week we completed our Cave Art unit of work. We used the ideas and techniques that we have been practising over the past few weeks, using chalk and charcoal, and produced some amazing pieces of art.

 Week 4

This week we worked in pairs to create scene dioramas. We used what we had read in 'Stone Age Boy' to work in pairs and design our settings.

 

In Science we recreated the Rock Cycle using Starburst Sweets, Lots of the children wanted to try this again at home.

Week 3

This week saw us logging on to Google Classroom and Purple Mash. We had great fun touch typing - it is amazing how much we remember from Year 2!

We loved dressing up in red, white and blue to celebrate French Week. During the day, we looked at The Snail (L’escargot) which is a piece of art completed by the French artist Henri Matisse. We learnt the French words for colours and recreated ‘L’escargot’.

Week 2

This week, we have continued our history topic. We have learnt that the Stone Age was in a period called ‘Prehistory’ which means ‘before history’. We know that this means there was no written evidence that could help us build a picture of life during the Stone Age. After looking at cave paintings, we were able to learn about their daily life and animals that lived at the time.

We linked our understanding of ‘prehistory’ to our spellings. This week, we have learnt about the prefix ‘pre’. It means ‘’before’, so we explored how it changed a base word when we added it. 
Some examples we found were: preteach, preheat, prepare.

Week 1

Octopus class have had a great start to the Autumn term. It has been lots of fun seeing our friends, meeting our teachers and getting to know the routines of Year 3. We have spent time remembering the importance of rules and have set up our class rules.
